Once I Loved
‘Once I Loved’
‘Once I Loved’(“O Amor em Paz”) is a well-known bossa nova jazz standard originally composed in 1960 by Antônio Carlos Jobim, with lyrics added by Vinícius de Moraes. (all info from Wikipedia) The first recording was released in 1961 by João Gilberto on his self-titled album João Gilberto. Jobim later recorded ‘Once I Loved’ as an instrumental (in 1963) on his debut album, ‘The Composer of Desafinado Plays’.
I have always really liked bossa nova songs and this is a particular favourite of mine to play, since I first heard it as a music student in the 1980s. There is also a truly excellent version of ‘Once I Loved’ played by the legendary jazz guitarist Pat Martino on his El Hombre album from 1967, when he was just 22 years old. Unbelievable playing too! I highly recommend buying the album.
Guitarist Steve Khan has an excellent transcription of Pat Martino’s solo on ‘Once I Loved’ on his guitar transcriptions page. Well worth checking out and trying to learn some of Pat’s lines on this amazing recording.
Anyway, I do hope you enjoy my own recording of ‘Once I Loved’. Whilst I’m obviously no Pat Martino, it was certainly fun to record this and try and negotiate my way through the chord changes!
Thanks for listening,
