Quartal Chords – Voicings in Fourths
Quartal chords (or chord voicings built in fourths) are very popular in jazz music and here is a short lesson on learning some useful quartal chord forms to harmonise a C major scale.
The quartal chords illustrated below are adapted from traditional Drop 2 chord shapes which you may already be familiar with. Fourth voicings can be mixed with regular chord forms very easily and do not have to be played in isolation. ‘So What’ by Miles Davis is a well known example of a composition that employs these voicings.
Enjoy learning these quartal chords and applying them to your music.
